In May 2020, Bridget Manley joined DESIGNxHUMANITY, a volunteer instructional design collective that creates learning experiences advocating for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).
She worked with a team of other designers to create a text-based volunteer onboarding course for the organization.
The course delivered information in a drip-feed format via daily text messages. Lessons were designed to help learners acclimate to the organization’s values, mission, culture, and roles.
Bridget’s other collaborators were:
Princess Walsh, Psy D, Instructional designer and project owner
Melissa Bazley, Instructional designer
Chris Syracuse, Instructional designer and graphic designer
Designing course topics and objectives; writing lesson content; developing basic interactions; uploading lessons into Arist; receiving, responding to, and incorporating feedback from internal QA.
The response from the organization’s internal QA was highly positive; reviewers enjoyed the short yet informative daily texts, and they appreciated the conversational tone of the text messages and emojis.
